I am a tax partner and also the managing partner for BDO’s Reading and Bristol offices which provide a full service offering to clients located within the Thames Valley and South West regions. The region has more than 30 partners and 500 staff providing audit, tax and advisory services and my role is to manage the team and ensure we are providing exceptional client service.
I work with a range of clients, including public, private equity backed and private companies, many of which have international operations, particularly in the US.
With a career spanning over 30 years, I specialise in corporate tax, typically dealing with tax planning, ranging from corporate issues, arising on both organic and acquisitive growth, to employee benefit and shareholder exit planning. I am also experienced in reorganisations, management buyout (MBO)/management buy-ins (MBIs), flotations and capital gains tax planning and act for a number of private equity and venture capital backed groups which operate in the UK and internationally.
I am a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, chair BDO’s national tax technical committee and I am on the EIS Association tax and technical committee. I write the ‘Venture Capital Taxes’ book and the chapters in ‘Revenue Law-Principles in Practice’ and ‘Tax Planning’, all published by Bloomsbury Professional. I also write the tax chapter in “A Practitioner’s Guide to the AIM Rules” and regularly speak at conferences on tax efficient fundraising and tax aspects of M&A.
Outside of work, I enjoy going to the gym and sailing. I have a young family who keep me very busy and I am a Governor at the local primary school.
